We had a really successful science fair today with 12 outstanding projects on the theme of “Adapt and Change”. Judging was incredibly difficult but we eventually agreed on:
1st Place: Changes and Adaptations of Butterflies and Frogs: By Sophia, Soph, Juliette and Hollie. They studied the metamorphic changes of both butterflies and frogs. The students had made a fantastic model chrysalis to show the defence wiggle to scare off potential predators. The judges were blown away by the quality of the posters and the confidence with which the girls explained the changes within the life cycle of these animals.
2nd Place: Floating Cities by: Tulin, Eleanor, Summer and Swathini. These students looked at the impact of rising CO2 levels on the oceans. Having researched the impact of carbon emissions on the global temperature they found that rising sea levels would be a major global issue in years to come. They then designed a potential future global city that would allow humans to adapt to the changing landscape of earth. The judges were particularly impressed by the level of scientific literacy the team demonstrated, turning some complex concepts into an accessible presentation.
3rd Place: The Growing Problem of Antibiotic Resistance by: Rukayya, Lily, Grace and Evalina. This team set up their own scientific study to investigate the how resistant bacteria are to antibiotics. They found through the research they conducted alongside this study that bacteria are becoming more resistant to common antibiotics and that scientists are needing to rapidly develop more antibiotics to combat this issue to prevent it becoming a global crisis. The judges were impressed by their approach to the collecting scientific data to support their research.
