On Friday 12th July Cheadle Hulme Sixth Form delighted to welcome The Right Reverand Dr David Walker, Lord Bishop of Manchester and member of the House of Lords into Cheadle Hulme Sixth Form.

Dr David spoke to all of Year 12 about the work of the House of Lords as part of the popular ‘Learn with the Lords’ offer to schools.

Dr. Walker’s talk shed light on the House of Lords’ functions, including its involvement in passing laws, holding the government accountable, and offering recommendations through committee work. He also compared the House of Lords to the House of Commons and explained the unique role of the 26 Church of England Bishops within the Lords. These bishops, known as Lords Spiritual, hold the same rights as other Lords, such as participating in debates and voting. They also lead prayers at the start of each session.

Dr David then facilitated a brilliant question and answer session, with students asking a range of questions about the demographic of the House, its role as an unbiased second chamber, and its ability to adapt to societal needs.
